A Strategic Move Towards Sustainable Growth
APM Terminals, in collaboration with Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), has secured a 15-year extension on its concession to operate the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) in Jordan, taking the partnership until 2046. This development, which was recently approved by the Cabinet in Amman, underscores APM Terminals’ commitment to enhancing Jordan’s logistics infrastructure and solidifying ACT’s position as a critical gateway for the Jordanian economy and neighboring countries.
Since 2006, APM Terminals and ADC have transformed ACT into a vital logistics hub, with the terminal handling over 898,000 TEUs in 2023—a 5.4% increase from the previous year. As part of the extended agreement, APM Terminals plans to invest approximately USD 242 million, focusing on reducing emissions and achieving net zero carbon output by 2040. This commitment to sustainability is already being demonstrated through the use of solar energy, reducing the environmental impact of electricity and water consumption.
Commitment to Sustainable and Technological Progress
Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals, emphasized that the extension of the partnership will further explore opportunities to create a green corridor for Jordan’s supply chains. He highlighted the importance of this extension in expanding job opportunities and upskilling employees, contributing to the country’s overall economic growth.
In addition to its sustainability focus, ACT has introduced several technological advancements, including a new Operations Command Centre, which allows for real-time monitoring of terminal operations, and a laser-based Truck Alignment System, reducing turnaround times for loading and unloading trucks.
Public-Private Partnership Strengthening Jordan’s Economy
H.E. Hussein Safadi, CEO of ADC, hailed the partnership as a prime example of successful public-private collaboration in Jordan, noting that it has consistently delivered remarkable results since 2006. He highlighted the extension as a key driver for achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and strengthening Jordan’s logistics and supply chain infrastructure.
Moreover, the extended agreement includes a USD 500,000 investment in training programs for Jordanian personnel across various sectors, further aligning with Jordan’s economic development goals.
Global Electrification Pilot
Aqaba Container Terminal is also part of APM Terminals’ global electrification pilot program, which aims to transition the company’s operations to electric container handling equipment. This pilot, also being implemented in terminals in the US, Spain, and Egypt, underscores APM Terminals’ efforts to lead the charge in reducing the maritime industry’s carbon footprint and fostering greener port operations.
This strategic extension not only strengthens the partnership between APM Terminals and Jordan but also sets the stage for the terminal to become a model of sustainable and efficient logistics in the region. As APM Terminals continues its commitment to technological innovation and environmental responsibility, the ACT is poised to play a critical role in Jordan’s economic and environmental future.
