Maritime News, Bhubaneswar, India : In a significant milestone for India’s maritime education ecosystem, the School of Maritime Studies (SoMS) at Centurion University has been designated a Global Centre of Excellence — becoming only the second institution worldwide to receive this elite recognition jointly conferred by The Nautical Institute (NI) and the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST).

The recognition positions the institution as the first in Southeast Asia and one of only two globally to achieve this distinction from the two leading international maritime professional bodies representing nautical science and marine engineering.

The status was formally inaugurated by Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways.

Elevating India in Global Maritime Education

India has long been recognised as a major supplier of seafaring manpower to global fleets. However, this accreditation signals a shift from labour supply to leadership in high-tier maritime education and research.

The “Centre of Excellence” recognition is awarded only to institutions that demonstrate exceptional standards in maritime training, professional development, and adherence to global safety and technical benchmarks.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Shantanu Thakur stated:

“This recognition places Centurion University at the forefront of the global maritime map. It reinforces India’s commitment to producing world-class maritime professionals who will lead the future of global trade.”

Strategic Implication for the Blue Economy

The accreditation aligns with India’s broader blue economy ambitions and maritime growth strategy, particularly as the country aims to strengthen its global shipping, port, and shipbuilding footprint.

Joint validation from NI and IMarEST signifies that:

  • Training standards meet international compliance norms
  • Graduates are aligned with global operational and safety benchmarks
  • Curriculum integrates contemporary maritime industry demands
  • Institutional frameworks support research and professional excellence

Industry experts note that such recognition enhances India’s credibility not only as a manpower supplier but as a centre for maritime knowledge and leadership.

Regional Leadership Position

By becoming the sole recipient of this distinction in Southeast Asia, Centurion University has positioned itself among an elite global tier, surpassing established maritime education hubs in the region.

Dr. Supriya Pattanayk, Vice-Chancellor of Centurion University, remarked:

“Out of our 17 specialised schools, SoMS has blazed a trail. Achieving this global gold standard reflects the dedication required to be truly world-class.”

The event was attended by Prof. Mukti Mishra, President of Centurion University; Capt. Vikas Patra, Director of SoMS and Group Managing Director of Seaborne Ship Management; Prof. (Dr.) Ajaya Kumar Nayak, Pro-Vice Chancellor; along with faculty members and students.

A Shift in India’s Maritime Narrative

This milestone represents more than institutional recognition. It reflects a broader transformation:

  • From workforce supplier to maritime knowledge leader
  • From compliance-driven training to innovation-oriented education
  • From regional presence to global accreditation

As India pushes toward its long-term maritime and economic ambitions under Viksit Bharat 2047, globally benchmarked maritime education institutions are expected to play a critical role in shaping the next generation of maritime professionals.
