Promoting friendly bilateral relations, sharing common values of democracy, development, and secularism
Maputo, Mozambique : As part of its ongoing Extended Operational Deployment to Africa, the Indian Naval Ship Sumedha arrived in Maputo, Mozambique on November 21, 2023. The port call is aimed at reinforcing long-standing diplomatic relations, strengthening maritime cooperation, and enhancing interoperability between the Indian and Mozambican navies.
During the visit, from November 23-25, 2023, a series of professional interactions, cross-deck visits, planning conferences, and Joint EEZ surveillance exercises are scheduled. Additionally, the Commanding Officer of INS Sumedha will pay courtesy calls on various dignitaries and government officials of Mozambique, including the Navy Commandant of the Mozambique Navy and the Mayor of Maputo City.
India and Mozambique have traditionally maintained warm and friendly bilateral relations, sharing common values of democracy, development, and secularism. These ties have been fostered through regular high-level exchanges and interactions in various fields. Bilateral Defense Cooperation has also been progressing through periodic Joint Defence Working Group (JDWG) meetings.
In line with the Indian Navy’s mission of building ‘bridges of friendship’ and strengthening international cooperation with friendly countries, Indian Naval ships are routinely deployed overseas.
INS Sumedha, an integral part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam, operates under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The ship is equipped with a range of weapon systems, sensors, state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems, and Electronic Warfare suits. Sumedha has successfully undertaken various Fleet support operations, coastal and offshore patrolling, ocean surveillance, and HADR missions in the past.
This port call by INS Sumedha further underscores the strong bilateral relations between India and Mozambique and reaffirms the commitment of both nations to enhancing maritime cooperation and ensuring the safety and security of the Indian Ocean Region.
