First Multi-Purpose Vessel Set to Enhance Indian Navy’s Capabilities ‘Samarthak’
A Milestone for Indigenous Shipbuilding in India
Maritime News India : Chennai, India – On October 14, 2024, the Indian Navy celebrated a significant achievement with the launch of the first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), named ‘Samarthak,’ at L&T Shipyard in Kattupalli, Chennai. The vessel, which means ‘Supporter,’ symbolizes the versatile role it is designed to fulfill within naval operations.
The ceremony, presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, was marked by maritime traditions and was graced by Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, President of the Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), who had the honor of launching the ship.
Innovative Capabilities
The contract for the construction of two MPVs was signed between the Ministry of Defence and L&T Shipyard on March 25, 2022. These vessels are engineered to perform a variety of functions, including towing ships, launching and recovering targets, operating uncrewed autonomous vehicles, and serving as trial platforms for indigenous weapons and sensors currently in development. Each vessel boasts a maximum speed of 15 knots and measures 106 meters in length and 16.8 meters in width.

The launch of ‘Samarthak’ represents a pivotal moment in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defense manufacturing, aligning with the Government of India’s vision for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
