Expansion to Double Terminal Capacity with New Consortium Partnership
Maritime News : Rotterdam, Netherlands – APM Terminals Maasvlakte II (MVII) in Rotterdam has taken a significant step forward with the awarding of a civil works and electrification contract for its planned expansion. The contract has been awarded to CareGo, a consortium comprising ABB, Dura Vermeer, and GMB. This expansion will add 51 hectares to the terminal, doubling its capacity and reinforcing MVII’s position as one of the most advanced automated terminals in the world.
Project Scope and Infrastructure Development
The expansion will introduce 31 additional yard blocks, increased quay area, and enhanced truck and rail facilities, along with crucial supporting infrastructure. As part of the development, the Rotterdam Port Authority has already constructed 1,000 meters of new deep-sea quay to accommodate larger ships, setting the stage for future growth. While the financial details remain undisclosed, the scope of the project is set to transform the terminal’s operational capabilities.
A Leading Consortium of Expertise
The selection of CareGo, which brings together technology leader ABB with two prominent Dutch construction firms Dura Vermeer and GMB, was driven by their combined expertise in container terminal construction and electrification. ABB will spearhead the electrification work, providing key solutions including prefabricated substations, datacenters, terminal lighting, fiber optic networks, and power supplies to cranes and reefer containers. Meanwhile, Dura Vermeer and GMB will handle the civil works, including the construction of pavements, crane tracks, reefer racks, fencing, and the expansion of the rail terminal.
Innovative, Sustainable Solutions for Future Growth
“Building such a large, fully automated terminal in a short time frame is a challenging yet exciting task,” said Sander Lindemans, Project Director of CareGo. “Our experience with APM Terminals MVII has shown we are capable of delivering such innovative and sustainable projects, making us the ideal partner for this expansion.”
ABB’s Commitment to Reliable Power Solutions
Clara Holmgren, Business Line Manager at ABB Marine & Ports, emphasized the growing need for resilient power infrastructure as container terminals become increasingly electrified. “With our proven track record in automation solutions and microgrid designs for container terminals, we are excited to deliver this project and continue supporting APM Terminals MVII’s electrification efforts,” she said.
Optimistic Outlook for On-Time Completion
Harold Kunst, Managing Director of APM Terminals MVII, expressed confidence in the partnership. “We have a strong history of collaboration with ABB, Dura Vermeer, and GMB, and we are certain that the expansion will be completed as planned, doubling the terminal’s capacity on time and with the high-quality work we expect.”
