The high-level review meeting, held at Mantralaya, focused on venue readiness, logistics, security arrangements, and coordination among central and state agencies to ensure the smooth execution of what is expected to be the world’s largest maritime gathering. Senior officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the Government of Maharashtra attended the meeting.
PM Modi to Address Global Maritime CEO Forum
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the keynote address at the Global Maritime CEO Forum during the event, which is expected to draw over 100,000 delegates and 500 exhibitors from 100 countries.
At a press briefing following the review meeting, Sonowal said IMW 2025 will “position Mumbai as the epicentre of India’s global maritime ambitions,” calling the event a platform to “translate ideas into investments and partnerships.”
“Maritime Sector to Anchor ₹8 Trillion Investment by 2047”
Sonowal announced that the maritime sector is projected to attract investments worth ₹8 trillion by 2047, generating nearly 1.5 crore jobs.
“India is charting a course toward global leadership in the maritime sector with our Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, anchored in prosperity, sustainability, and national pride,” he said. “Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are transforming India’s ports, shipping, and logistics ecosystem into a resilient, sustainable, and future-ready network.”
The Union Minister added that the government’s maritime roadmap includes a US $1 trillion maritime investment plan, green port initiatives, and global collaborations to promote decarbonisation and digitalisation across the shipping sector.
Maritime Growth Indicators
According to official data, cargo movement on India’s inland waterways has increased eightfold since 2014, while the turnaround time at major ports has reduced by 60%. Over ₹5.5 lakh crore worth of Sagarmala projects are currently in progress, aimed at reshaping India’s coastal logistics and trade infrastructure.
India now accounts for 12% of the world’s seafarers, reflecting its growing influence in global shipping and maritime manpower. The government has also committed to achieving carbon neutrality across all 12 major ports by 2047, with green transition targets for 2035 already underway.
Global and Domestic Participation
Sonowal confirmed that ministerial delegations from Singapore, the UAE, South Korea, Japan, and Denmark will participate in IMW 2025. Representatives from global bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and UNESCAP will also attend.
Major Indian states — including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu — and key industry players such as Adani Ports and Logistics, Cochin Shipyard, and Paradip Port Authority are expected to showcase their latest projects and collaborations.
“Maximum City Mumbai will unlock maximum opportunities and maximise possibilities through IMW 2025,” Sonowal said, adding that the event will reflect India’s emergence as a “strategic maritime power” in the Indo-Pacific.
Towards a Maritime Future
India Maritime Week 2025 will serve as the flagship convergence point for policymakers, global maritime leaders, and investors to discuss advancements in shipbuilding, port modernisation, logistics, and sustainability.
The summit will align with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Amrit Kaal Maritime Vision 2047, seeking to make India a key player in global trade, technology, and blue economy growth.
