Vizhinjam International Seaport Overcomes Hurdles to Welcome Second Project Vessel with India’s Biggest STS Crane
Vizhinjam, Kerala, India : Overcoming delays and legal complications, Vizhinjam International Seaport successfully received its second project vessel, Zhen Hua 29, carrying a India’s biggest Ship-to-Shore (STS) crane on Monday afternoon. The vessel, initially scheduled to arrive on November 9, 2023, faced setbacks, including adverse weather conditions and awaited clearance from the Union Home Ministry.
The critical STS crane is said to be a pivotal addition that will significantly enhance the operational efficiency of the Vizhinjam International Seaport. The delay in berthing, resolved on November 13, posed challenges for the 34 Chinese crew members who had to anchor off the coast until permission was granted.

The arrival is being marked as a milestone for the seaport’s ambition to position itself as a hub of operational excellence. The STS crane will be unloaded and will be operational from forth coming week, while the four yard cranes, will be sailed to Mundra Port.
The STS crane is said to play a vital role in handling larger vessels and cargo volumes, contributing to the overall development of Vizhinjam International Seaport.
The third project cargo vessel is anticipated on November 25, followed by the fourth on December 15, forming part of the port developer’s order for a total of eight quay cranes and 24 yard cranes essential for port operations.
