Olympic Champion Manu Bhaker Appointed Brand Ambassador for Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways

In a significant announcement, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) has appointed double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker as its new Brand Ambassador. The appointment was announced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, recognizing Bhaker’s remarkable achievements in the world of sports and her deep-rooted connection to the maritime sector as the daughter of a marine engineer.

A Powerful Symbol of India’s Maritime Strength
Manu Bhaker, who won two medals in shooting at the recent Paris Olympics, is set to champion the maritime sector. Her journey from a marine family to an international sports icon symbolizes the discipline, perseverance, and commitment that both the maritime and sports sectors share. Speaking at the event, Shri Sonowal expressed pride in Bhaker’s accomplishments:
“It is a moment of great pride for every Indian that Manu Bhaker, the daughter of a proud marine sailor, will now champion India’s maritime sector. Her story embodies the values of punctuality, discipline, and hard work that the marine sector holds dear.”

Who Benefits and How
This collaboration brings several benefits across different sectors:

  1. Youth Engagement in Maritime Careers: Bhaker’s appointment is expected to inspire the younger generation, especially women, to consider careers in the maritime sector. Her story will serve as a role model for youth across India, showcasing the opportunities available in the sector and its alignment with India’s vision of becoming self-reliant (Atmanirbhar Bharat) by 2047.
  2. Promotion of Maritime Sector: By associating with a global sports figure like Bhaker, the Ministry aims to raise awareness about the growing opportunities in the Indian maritime industry. The partnership will amplify the sector’s role in the nation’s development, focusing on port modernization, green shipping, and sustainable practices.
  3. Women Empowerment: In conjunction with Bhaker’s appointment, the event also celebrated notable women achievers in the maritime and sporting sectors. Lt Commander Vartika Joshi, the first woman to skipper the INSV Tarini, Sonali Banerjee, the first woman marine engineer, and several Paralympic medalists were honored for their contributions to nation-building. This recognition highlights the role of women in advancing both the maritime and sporting industries, further encouraging women’s participation in these fields.

Inspiring Women Achievers
The event also spotlighted women achievers who have broken barriers in maritime and sports. Shri Sonowal praised their contributions, emphasizing the role of Nari Shakti (women’s power) in building a prosperous and vibrant society. He acknowledged that these women bring not only success but also hope and inspiration for future generations.

Nation-Building Through Sport and Maritime Progress
The connection between sports and the maritime sector was further reinforced by Thulasimathi Murugesan, a silver medalist from the Paris Paralympics, who thanked Prime Minister Modi for his support of Indian athletes. She noted how India’s performance at international sporting events has surged, with 29 medals won at the 2024 Paralympics—a significant leap from previous years.

Commitment to Sustainability and Cleanliness
The event also coincided with the Swachhata Hi Sewa 2024 campaign, commemorating Prime Minister Modi’s birthday. Over 500 women, including students and employees, participated in the cleanliness drive and tree-planting initiative, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (One Tree for the Mother). Shri Sonowal highlighted the importance of sustainability, saying, “Cleanliness and sustainability are core to our journey towards a better and stronger India.”

Looking Ahead
As Manu Bhaker takes on the mantle of Brand Ambassador, her role is expected to be a catalyst for change, promoting maritime opportunities while also driving sustainability and progress. Through her association with the Ministry, she will amplify India’s efforts to create a modern, sustainable maritime ecosystem that contributes significantly to the nation’s growth and global standing.

This initiative, along with the recognition of women achievers, marks an important step in celebrating both India’s sporting excellence and its evolving maritime capabilities.
