Minister Highlights Strategic Importance of Pandu Port

Maritime News India : Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently visited the Pandu Port Complex to assess the progress of significant construction projects, including the Northeast’s first Ship Repair Facility and an Elevated Road Corridor.

Investment of ₹645 Crores for Development

During the visit, Sonowal emphasized the government’s commitment to developing inland waterways, specifically the Brahmaputra River, which is designated as National Waterways 2. The government has allocated ₹645 crores for 10 key projects aimed at enhancing river tourism, public transportation, and cargo movement.

Ship Repair Facility to Enhance Regional Maritime Industry

The Ship Repair Facility, currently under construction with an investment of ₹208 crores, is being developed by Hooghly-Cochin Shipyard Limited (HCSL). This facility is expected to significantly reduce operational costs for shipping and vessel operators in the region, marking a transformative step for local maritime activities.

Infrastructure Improvements to Boost Connectivity

In addition to the Ship Repair Facility, the Union Minister reviewed plans for an elevated road corridor that will connect the Pandu Port Complex to NH27, backed by an investment of ₹180 crores. These infrastructure improvements are set to facilitate smoother logistical operations, bolstering Pandu’s role as a critical hub for trade in Northeast India.

Renewed Focus on Majuli Bridge Construction

Sonowal also reaffirmed the Union Government’s commitment to expedite the construction of the Majuli Bridge over the Brahmaputra. He stated that measures have been taken to ensure the project is completed swiftly without compromising quality.

Commitment to Assam’s Development

With projects exceeding ₹760 crores currently underway in Assam, the government’s dedication to the region’s growth is clear. Initiatives include the development of seven tourist jetties along the Brahmaputra, aimed at promoting river tourism and water sports.
