New Oil Jetty No. 8 to Propel Deendayal Port Authority’s Capacity for POL and LPG Handling

Gandhidham, August 14, 2024— In a strategic move to bolster port infrastructure and community welfare, TK Ramachandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), has unveiled the development of the New Oil Jetty No. 8 at Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Gujarat. This pivotal project, alongside a suite of CSR-funded initiatives, underscores the ministry’s commitment to enhancing port operations and promoting inclusivity.

A Major Leap in Port Capacity

The New Oil Jetty No. 8, located at Old Kandla, represents a significant upgrade to DPA’s infrastructure. With a revised project cost of ₹225.85 Crores, this jetty is set to handle POL (Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) products with an optimal capacity of 3.50 MMTPA (Million Metric Tons Per Annum). Designed to accommodate vessels with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) between 80,000 and 100,000 and a draught of 13 meters, the jetty’s construction comes as existing oil jetties approach full utilization.

The jetty’s pipeline installation for LPG has received the green light from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) – EAC committee. Although the LPG pipeline is anticipated to be operational by mid-2026, efforts are underway to expedite the process. Additionally, IOCL plans to initiate bunkering operations, handling 0.5 MMTPA of fuel, with preparations for these operations expected to be completed by the end of August 2024.

Empowering Communities Through CSR Initiatives

During his visit, TK Ramachandran also inaugurated several CSR-funded initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and mobility of differently-abled and underprivileged communities. A new Labour Amenity Centre was inaugurated within the Cargo Jetty Area, offering essential amenities to the port’s labor force. This facility is part of the broader CSR efforts to enhance working conditions and provide better facilities for those working at the port.

In a bid to enhance mobility and accessibility, five new buses/vans were introduced at the Administrative Office Building Complex of DPA, Kandla. Purchased at a total cost of ₹105.14 lakhs through CSR funds, these vehicles will serve various organizations dedicated to the welfare of Divyangjans (differently-abled individuals) and community services.

A Vision for Sustainable Port Development

TK Ramachandran highlighted the dual focus of the initiative: “This program reflects MoPSW’s commitment to utilizing CSR funds to create significant impacts in the lives of those who need it most. Alongside our strategic infrastructure expansions, such as the development of the new oil jetty, MoPSW ensures that essential services and facilities are accessible to all, fostering both community welfare and the port’s growth.”

The visit also included discussions on future initiatives aligned with the Ministry’s broader vision for the maritime sector. Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of DPA, and Nandeesh Shukla, Deputy Chairman of DPA, along with key departmental heads and representatives of beneficiary organizations, attended the meeting.

Shaping India’s Maritime Future

The New Oil Jetty No. 8 and CSR initiatives align with the Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, an extension of the Maritime India Vision 2030. This vision aims to develop world-class ports, promote inland water transport, coastal shipping, and a sustainable maritime sector. With over 150 consultations and analysis of 50 international benchmarks, the vision outlines more than 300 actionable initiatives for enhancing ports, shipping, and waterways by 2047.

As Deendayal Port Authority moves forward with these transformative projects, the integration of advanced infrastructure with community-focused initiatives exemplifies India’s commitment to a progressive, inclusive maritime industry.
