Global logistics giant DP World has taken a significant step towards environmental stewardship with the launch of its Mangroves Initiative in Cochin. This large-scale effort, aimed at restoring and preserving the region’s critical coastal ecosystems, is being carried out in partnership with Plan@Earth, a local non-profit committed to environmental conservation. Spanning 50 acres across four panchayats—Pallipuram, Kuzhipilly, Kadamakudy, and Narakkal—this project marks a substantial contribution to Kerala’s fight against climate change.
The initiative is a part of DP World’s broader sustainability mission, Our World, Our Future, which aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water. The company’s commitment to ocean and coastal conservation is reflected in this latest endeavor to revitalize mangrove forests—natural barriers against coastal erosion, rising sea levels, and one of the most efficient carbon sinks in the world.
A Green Revolution in Cochin’s Coastal Belt
The heart of this initiative lies in the planting of 100,000 mangrove saplings over the next three years. Targeting Cochin’s vulnerable coastal belt, the program aims to shield local communities from climate change impacts while enhancing biodiversity. Mangroves, often referred to as ‘nature’s bio-shields,’ are crucial to sustaining the delicate balance between marine ecosystems and human activity. Not only do they absorb carbon at record rates, but they also provide shelter for countless species, making them invaluable to both environmental and economic resilience.
DP World’s commitment doesn’t end with sapling plantations. The company has devised a long-term plan to ensure the survival and thriving of these ecosystems. By involving local communities in the process, DP World hopes to create a sense of shared responsibility and engagement. This collaborative approach ensures ongoing care and maintenance of the mangrove plantations, fostering a connection between the community and their environment.

The Mangroves Initiative was inaugurated by Kerala’s Hon’ble MLA, Mr. KN Unnikrishnan, alongside Mr. Dipin Kayyath, Senior Director of Operations & Engineering at DP World Cochin. The event was a testimony to the growing synergy between government, corporate, and community efforts toward sustainable development.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Praveen Joseph, CEO of DP World Ports & Terminals, Cochin, emphasized the critical role of mangroves in mitigating the effects of climate change. “Mangroves are essential not just for protecting our coastlines but also for enhancing biodiversity and serving as natural bio-shields,” he said. “Our initiative aligns with government efforts and highlights our responsibility to create a resilient future for the communities we serve. By engaging local residents, we hope to deepen their connection with the environment and bolster their understanding of the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems.”
A Global Commitment to Mangrove Conservation
While DP World’s Mangrove Initiative in Cochin is an important milestone, it is part of a broader, global effort by the company. Similar projects are underway in Posorja’s Puná Island, Ecuador, where the company has re-populated 105 hectares of wetlands with over 218,000 seedlings, and in the UAE, where DP World is a key partner in the Mangrove Alliance for Climate.
