In a momentous occasion for India’s maritime industry, the country’s largest Sea-to-Shore (STS) crane was seamlessly unloaded at Vizhinjam International Seaport on Thursday, 16 November 2023 morning. The unloading operation, meticulously executed by a team of around 50 skilled personnel utilizing a combination of rail and cranes, was completed within an impressive 2.30 hours.
Boasting a remarkable lifting capacity of 120 tonnes, this STS crane stands as the second such unit to be installed at Vizhinjam International Seaport. The installation process is anticipated to be concluded within approximately one week.
This landmark achievement marks a significant milestone for Vizhinjam International Seaport and India’s maritime sector as a whole. The newly acquired STS crane will play a pivotal role in handling containerized cargo at the port, effectively augmenting its capacity and efficiency.
In a remarkable feat of resilience, Vizhinjam International Seaport overcame a series of delays and legal complexities to successfully receive its second project vessel, Zhen Hua 29, carrying India’s largest Ship-to-Shore (STS) crane on Monday, 13 November 2023 afternoon.
This STS crane represents the second of its kind to be introduced at Vizhinjam International Seaport. The vessel’s initial arrival schedule was set for 09 November 2023, but faced unforeseen setbacks, including adverse weather conditions and the requisite clearance from the Union Home Ministry.
Despite these challenges, the berthing delay was successfully resolved on 13 November, ensuring the smooth arrival of the vessel and its precious cargo. The 34 Chinese crew members, who had been patiently awaiting permission to dock, were finally able to disembark after a period of anchoring off the coast.
This successful unloading operation underscores the unwavering commitment of Vizhinjam International Seaport to operational excellence and its dedication to positioning India as a global maritime powerhouse. The acquisition of India’s largest STS crane marks a transformative step towards achieving this goal.
