Kochi, India: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) hosted a workshop in Kochi, Kerala, titled “Charting a Course for Green Inland Vessels Transition.” The event, held in collaboration with the World Bank and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), focused on promoting green shipping practices and accelerating the transition towards sustainable transportation in India.

The workshop attracted representatives from various state governments, including Maharashtra, and key stakeholders in the maritime and inland waterway transportation sectors. This gathering provided a valuable platform for discussions and collaborations aimed at achieving the ambitious goals of net-zero emissions outlined in the “MIV 2030” and “Amritkal Vision 2047” initiatives.

One of the key highlights of the workshop was the emphasis on water metro projects as a promising solution for green and sustainable transportation. Notably, the successful implementation of the Kochi Water Metro project served as a major inspiration and model for future initiatives.

Representatives from the Kochi Water Metro shared their experience and insights on how this innovative project has not only promoted modal adoption of water transport but also established a global benchmark with its large fleet of electric vessels. This success story resonated with other state governments, including Maharashtra, who expressed keen interest in replicating the model in their own regions.

The workshop facilitated fruitful discussions around a proposed scheme aimed at financing, constructing, and rolling out green vessel initiatives.
