A speedboat caught fire near Mandwa jetty in Alibaug leaves two boat operators injured showcasing negligence of Authorities
Alibaug, Maharashtra : A speedboat caught fire near the Mandwa jetty in Alibaug on Saturday 02 December 2023 afternoon. It left two individuals with injuries. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM, causing panic among the local speedboat riders, tourists, local traders, residents and disrupting ferry services.
The cause of the fire remains still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that the fire must have happened due to an electrical malfunction. The flames quickly engulfed the boat, sending plumes of smoke into the air.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Mandwa police and fire brigade responded very quickly to the scene. Despite their efforts, the boat was severely damaged and rendered inoperable.
The two injured individuals, who were reported were the boat operators. They were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, but they remain under observation.
The Mandwa jetty, is a popular tourist destination and a crucial link to nearby islands. The jetty was temporarily closed following the incident. Ferry services however resumed later in the evening after safety inspections were conducted.
This is no new incident in Mandwa, earlier also such incidents have been registered. The reason behind it are the authorities who do not do timely thorough inspection of these speedboats that are meant for joyrides. Fortunately the fire erupt when there were no tourist on board. The tourism department must take due responsibility for ensuring the safety of the tourists. Similarly the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways must also intervene for the safety of the Boat Operators.
The speedboat fire serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols and maintaining regular maintenance checks on all vessels. Local authorities have urged boat operators to exercise caution and prioritize safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
